Eight leaders of the Pimpri-Chinchwad unit of the Shiv Sena and its students’ wing, Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena, have started a fast to death from Sunday to oppose the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP) near the Vivekanand School in Dapodi.

The Sena leaders claimed the 3,500 students of the school, which is run by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), would face health hazards if the STP is constructed there.

The Sena questioned the rationale of the civic body in setting up the STP so close to the school. As per the development plan, a plot in Sangvi was reserved for the construction of a 20 MLD (million litres daily) STP for areas like Sangvi, New Sangvi and Pimple Gurav.

Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena vice-president Sarang Kamthekar told DNA, “The PCMC did not even call for any suggestions or objections for the project in Dapodi before starting the construction work.”

He claimed that in the development plan, the STP was planned at Sangvi, where the land belongs to the PCMC. “But it is unable to carry out the work on that piece of land since there are encroachments. The land at Dapodi, where the project is coming up, is a private one,” he claimed.

“The waste that will be processed at Dapodi is generated at Sangvi. The PCMC will have to spend about Rs28 lakh for setting up equipment to pump the waste to Dapodi from Sangvi. It is squandering  public money,” he alleged.

However, the PCMC commissioner, Ashish Sharma said the project cannot be rolled back as its construction has already begun. “This is a JNNURM project. We are constructing it where we have got the land,” he added.
