Robbers break open jewellery shop in Mumbai suburb

A jewellery shop was today broken open and gold and silver valuables worth Rs8.10 lakh were looted by three unidentified robbers in Ghatkopar suburb of Mumbai who thrashed a watchman and a police constable and fired a bullet at another constable before escaping from the spot.

The constable escaped the bullet as he ducked immediately after the firing by the robbers, police said adding the watchman and another constable, who were thrashed with a rod were rushed to a nearby civic-run hospital.

Taking serious note of the robbery, Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik, accompanied by joint police commissioners Rajnish Seth and Himanshu Roy inspected the spot and held a meeting with juniors at Pant Nagar police station.

According to police, at about 4.30am, three unidentified robbers broke open B B Jewellers shop in Anil Kunj building in suburban Ghatkopar and looted 15kg silver worth Rs7.50 lakh and 30gm of gold worth Rs60,000.

As they were leaving, Rambhanudas Ravan, the security guard of the building, came to the spot on hearing some sound from inside the shop, police said.

Realising that the robbers were looting valuables, he tried to catch them but he was thrashed with a rod injuring him seriously, police added.

Around the same time, two constables, Vikas Rajapure and Santosh Gaikwad, patrolling the area also tried to nab the accused. But Rajapure was hit with a rod while Gaikwad was fired at, police said.

Rajapure sustained injuries while Gaikwad escaped the bullet, police said adding that, "the accused drove away in an Indica car and vanished in the dark."

An FIR was registered against the accused in Pant Nagar police station, police said.

Besides local police, crime branch has also begun parallel investigation in the case.

All the accused appeared to be young, police said adding nakabandi across the city was intensified to zero in on the robbers.

Police suspect the car used in the robbery might have been stolen by the accused. Further probe was on.
