Trendy battery-operated scooterettes, Yobykes, will be offered on rent under the rent-a-bike scheme in the city from June this year.

The Pune district transport authority on Tuesday approved the scheme, under which a person unwilling to travel by bus or autorickshaw can hire such two-wheelers for travel.

Initially, the scheme will be launched on a trial basis in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Three franchisees will be located in Wanavdi, Kothrud and Chinchwad areas.

The Wanavdi-based franchisee, Jadhav Motor Training School authorities, said only people 18 years and above with driving licence will be allowed to rent the vehicles.

The owner of the school, Reshma and her husband Pratap Jadhav, told DNA that people willing to avail of the facility would have to register themselves at the franchisee office providing proper documents such as an identity card and address proof.

“They will be provided a smart card after verification. They have to give some money as a prepaid amount. Details, including the amount paid, will be fed into the smart card. It will be swiped and a certain amount would be deducted after a person gives back the vehicle,” Pratap said.

The vehicles can even be hired on weekly or monthly basis, apart from daily basis. The tariff would be calculated on hourly basis. “The tariff is being worked out and would be known by May-end,” he said.

According to him, the vehicles would be fitted with global positioning systems to track their movement. “There would also be an alarm system that would alert passers-by in case the rider is having a problem,” Pratap said.

As per the arrangement, the three franchisees will appoint sub-franchisees in different localities. “A vehicle hired in one place can be returned to any sub-franchisee’s office in the city. The localities where the franchisees would have their sub-franchisees are being decided,” Pratap said.

He said that it would be imperative for the person hiring the vehicle to wear a helmet while driving it.
