Re1 from each member of each family — this is what villagers of Jaitapur and surrounding areas are asking for to help the victims of the tsunami that struck Japan after the earthquake and the nuclear disaster that followed.

The villagers from five of the villages affected by the proposed nuclear power project have decided to collect Re1 each from all the members of every family from around 15 villages.

The anti-project activists are planning to visit around 10,000 people over the next few days, starting Friday, asking them to donate at least Re1 to help the Japanese.

The amount collected from the villagers will be given to the collector of Ratnagiri district. “We will ask him to transfer the money to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan. And we want Chavan himself to give that money to the people of Japan. He might realise the extent of the tragedy after he personally sees the people’s condition,” said Dr Milind Desai of Mithgavhane, one of the five project-affected villages.

“This is a form of protest but at the same time we want to show our solidarity with the people of Japan. The amount may not be large, but we want to extend our support and prayers to the people there,” he said. Desai was one of the activists who were arrested for allegedly being involved in the unlawful activities while protesting against the project.

According to villagers, the authorities have arrested 300 protesters till now. The deployment of policemen is to scare the villagers and stop them from protesting further, they alleged. The villagers are also holding condolence meetings across the areas in the memory of those who have lost their lives in Japan.
