A mention of rave parties conjures up images of dimly-lit rooms with blaring music, youngsters snorting drugs, free-flowing alcohol, promiscuous behaviour, orgies, etc.

Though not completely off the mark, regular partygoers claim that this stereotype is a creation of the media and the police.

“There are many things that people associate with rave parties which are not really true. Most people think that the partygoers have open sex and orgies at such parties, but it isn’t so,” said Anuj Sharma, who works for a public relations company. “I regularly go to such rave parties and I have never witnessed such obscene behaviour,” he added.

Although the police claimed that they busted a rave party at Bombay 72 degree, an upmarket pub in Juhu, regulars at such events don’t agree with the tag.

“At such parties there is only trance music and different kind of drugs. Alcohol is strictly prohibited. However, they were serving alcohol at the Juhu pub, so technically it wasn’t a rave party,” explained Saahil Khan, a young businessman. Also, these parties usually take place at somebody’s farmhouse or other far-off places to avoid any interference by the police, he added.

Regular partygoers said that the entry fee for a rave party was anything between Rs300 to Rs1,000. The host of the party arranges for different types of drugs like ecstasy, LSD, cocaine and hashish. Information about such events is passed on through friends or social networking sites. “News usually spread through word of mouth because such parties are very secretive and for a  limited number of people,” said Ramesh Gupta, 25, a software engineer.

The drugs which are highly consumed at such parties are hashish and cocaine. One tola of hashish is available for Rs1,500, while cocaine is for Rs3,500 per gram.

Ecstasy, which is also high in demand at rave parties, is available for Rs800 to Rs1,000 per tablet. “The most common drugs used are cocaine and hashish. People prefer hashish because it is easily available, and you don’t get addicted to it easily,” said Sanjay Pujari, superintendent of Narcotic Control Bureau.
