An MLA of ruling NCP in Maharashtra, Dilip Wagh, who has been accused of raping a girl, was arrested on Saturday evening in Mumbai, police said.

Wagh, wanted by Nashik police, has been arrested in Mumbai, police commissioner Sanjeev Dayal said.

"On request from Nashik police, Crime Branch had deployed its units to trace Wagh. The MLA has been picked up from a location in suburban Bandra. He will be handed over to Nashik police for further action," joint police commissioner (crime) Himanshu Roy said.

Nashik police had dispatched special teams to locate Wagh, the legislator from Pachora in North Maharashtra's Jalgaon district, who has been suspended by the NCP.

Wagh and his personal assistant Mahesh Mali were accused of rape in a complaint filed by the 20-year-old victim with the Nashik police yesterday. Mali is still absconding.

The victim in a complaint to the police alleged that the MLA and his assistant had called her to Nashik promising to help her get a job and had raped her in a guest house, Nashik deputy commissioner of police Subhash Nilewad said.

Nilewad said a medical examination of the girl, carried out in Nashik Civil Hospital, confirmed "sexual intercourse" with her.

As the police launched a search for Wagh, an embarrassed NCP moved quickly and suspended the legislator.

"The party has taken a serious view of the rape charges and suspended Wagh, who has alleged a conspiracy against him. If he is found not guilty, action taken would be withdrawn," deputy chief minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar said.

Earlier in the day, NCP President Sharad Pawar said "He (Wagh) should surrender and face the probe."

Maharashtra NCP President Madhukar Pichad has suspended the legislator and asked the Government to conduct an in-depth inquiry into the case, party spokesperson Madan Bafna said.
