Ketan Upadhyay was caught by the railway police just eight hours after robbing South Korean woman tourist on a local train at Mumbai Central.
Mumbai Central railway police arrested a youth for robbing a South Korean tourist in a train on Monday. The arrested person has been identified as Ketan Upadhyay, 20.
According to the police, Liu Kee (name changed to protect
identity), has been residing in India since October 2009 on a tourist visa. After celebrating Holi at Colaba, Kee came to Mumbai Central along with her friend Aditi. Aditi left for home and Kee took a train to Bandra around 11.45am.
She was alone in the first-class ladies’ compartment of the Malad-bound fast local. Upadhyay too boarded the train when it started. He threatened her and asked her to hand over the possessions. Although she didn’t really understand what Upadhyay told her in Hindi, assessing the adverse situation Kee refused to budge.
When Upadhyay allegedly tried to manhandle her, she bit him in the hand. But the attacker snatched a mobile phone and Rs123 from her. He then jumped off the train when it slowed down at Dadar station. Kee later lodged a complaint.
“On receiving the complaint, we flashed the message to all the railway police stations as well as all police stations in the city through wireless, with a sketch and detailed descriptions of the accused. The railway police also formed five police teams to trace him,” said Rane.
“We arrested Upadhyay from Mumbai Central station within eight hours and recovered the stolen mobile and the cash. The tourist has identified him,” said senior police inspector Bharat Kumar Rane of Mumbai Central railway police station.
Upadhyay has been remanded in police custody till March 8 by the Girgaon metropolitan magistrate court.
