Cashing in on the popularity of social networking sites, the city traffic branch has created a profile on Facebook called ‘Pune Traffic Police’ to get feedback from commuters on traffic violations and other grievances.

Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Manoj Patil said, “We had decided to have an account on Facebook, on the lines of those of the Mumbai and Delhi police. We found that many people have accounts on Facebook, so now we are planning to use the page to interact with people in the city. Now people can inform us about traffic issues and send us photos of traffic-related problems or violations,” he said.

He said if anyone posted their suggestions or informed the police about traffic violations, proper action against the violator would be taken and the sender would be informed about the action
taken.

“We are focusing on the youth as they are the ones who are constantly connected on social networking sites,” he added.
Patil urged citizens not to send complaints against policemen to the Facebook account, but instead send them in writing to the une police traffic branch.

He also outlined the steps taken by the traffic police to smoothen the traffic flow. “We have rescheduled the timing of traffic signals on main roads to mitigate traffic congestion. We urge the people to use the main roads while commuting,” he said.

The city traffic police will also redesign the zebra crossings and road markings. The police have created sketches of 171 chowks and sent them to the Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, Pune Cantonment Board and the Khadki Cantonment Board.

Patil said the traffic police were planning to launch drives against traffic violations. The first drive will be implemented in the city from November 20 to take action against those who park their vehicles on pavements and cycle tracks.
