Pune students learn to write judgment

The ILS Law College recently organised the third judgment writing competition in memory of the former district and sessions judge of Pune, PN Behere. It is a unique competition in terms of form and proceedings and 57 participants wrote the judgment.

Former judge Sharad Madke and college teacher Nilima Bhadbhade held a discussion with participants on the outline of a judgment, its content and style before the competition.

Justice Abhay Oka of the Bombay high court was the chief guest. He guided students and later shared his views with them about a judge’s role.

Justice Mridula Bhatkar was with the participants throughout the court proceedings. The brief consisting of statements, the chargesheet, panchnamas, oral evidence and statements of accused was circulated to participants two days before the contest. The case was devised by Bhadbhade on the basis of proceedings of a settled court matter.

The prizes were sponsored by Justice Mridula Bhatkar in memory of her late father, PN Behere. The first prize was bagged by Kirti Balasubramanian, the second shared between Rajlaxmi Joshi and Priyanka Kale, and the special prize for judgment in Marathi went to Sudam Kale.
