Even before the monsoon reaches the city, life was thrown out of gear in many localities in Pune following torrential pre-monsoon rain on Friday evening.

Incidents of water logging, traffic jams, falling of trees and short circuits were reported from different areas.

There was traffic chaos at Sancheti Chowk, Pune station, Deccan Gymkhana, Baner, Warje and other parts of the city. Vehicles moved at a snail’s pace in these areas as the roads were water logged.

The city traffic police sounded an alert following the heavy downpour through messages on the Facebook and by sending SMSes to residents.

The traffic police inspector (traffic administration), Vijaykumar Palsule told DNA that additional traffic police personnel were rushed to different locations to tackle the traffic jams. “The water logging was the main reason for the traffic jams,” he said.

The Pune fire brigade received calls regarding short circuits and falling of trees. Trees fell in Dandekar Bridge, Kamla Nehru Park and Paud areas. Short circuits were reported from a shop at Market Yard and at residences in Yerawada and Bhawani Peth.

The chief fire officer of the Pune fire brigade, Prashant Ranpise said the flood control department of the Pune Municipal Corporation has been advised to keep special vigil in low-lying areas and the areas near the banks of rivers.

Many areas faced acute power cuts due to the short circuits and falling of trees. Commuters, especially office-goers returning home in the evening, had a harrowing time during the downpour, waiting agonisingly for buses and autorickshaws.

People were seen waiting for a long time at the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus stands due to the poor frequency of the buses.

Sachin Kudale, a college student, who was waiting for a Pimpri-bound bus at the Shivajinagar bus stand, said, “I have been waiting for the bus for the last one hour. This is happening every year in the city. The authorities have to provide enough space at the bus stand, so we can stand there, but now I have to stand on the road in the rain.”

The PMPML authorities said several buses got stuck in traffic jams, delaying the services. Hence the commuters had to wait longer for the buses.
