The Pune rural police on Saturday booked Shashikant Chavan, an assistant police inspector (API) and incharge of Narayangaon police station, following the suicide of a PAN card agent, Kailash Chaskar.

Chavan has been booked for alleged abetment to suicide.
Chaskar of Narayangaon had committed suicide behind the Narmada Hotel in Bhosari on May 11. The bereaved family took possession of his body from the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital on Saturday morning. The victim’s relatives and a mob of over 100 people agitated in front of the Narayangaon police station with the body of the deceased demanding stringent action against Chavan, holding him responsible for Chaskar’s suicide.

The victim’s family submitted a complaint against Chavan.
The rural police registered an FIR against Chavan under the relevant sections of Indian Penal Code, 1860, for abetment to suicide. The complaint was later transferred to the Bhosari police as Chaskar had died within its jurisdiction.

Chavan claimed that he is being falsely implicated in the case.
Chavan had arrested five suspects, including Chaskar, in February this year as the latter was allegedly running a racket of issuing fake PAN cards to Bangladeshi nationals staying illegally in the district.

The police claimed the PAN cards that it had seized from some Bangladeshi migrants had the postal address of Chaskar, following which he was arrested.

“Chaskar was in police custody for a week and later in jail. At that time he did not complain of ill-treatment against any policeman. He was even produced in the court on two occasions. But there too, he did not complain about any kind of harassment,” Chavan said.

Chaskar was granted bail from the Bombay high court, as the Pune court had rejected his bail, and was released from jail two week ago.

Superintendent of police (Pune rural) Pratap Dighavkar said that he has directed deputy superintendent of police BR Patil of Khed division to conduct an inquiry and submit report.
