Renowned Indian philosopher and Hindi poet, Kunwar Narain, will be conferred with this year’s Pune Pandit award. The Art and Music Foundation, in association with Abasaheb Garware College, is presenting a seminar on his work on Friday.

Born in Faizabad in 1927, Kunwar Narain is regarded as a leading poet in Hindi. His house in Lucknow was a centre of literary meets and classical performances. From poetry to short stories to literary criticism, to essays on world cinema to history and Indian classical music, he has covered them all.

His poems have been translated into English, German, Russian and Italian, which makes him a poet with universal appeal.

However, owing to Narain’s ill-health, the award presentation ceremony will be held at a later date, said Manisha Kulkarni of the Art and Music Foundation. The programme will feature a 60-minute documentary on Kunwar Narain, followed by a session on ‘Philosophy of literature on Kunwar Narain’s prose’ by Gajanan Chavan, former professor in the Hindi department at the University of Pune.

There will also be a session on ‘Aspects of Kunwar Narain’s poetry’ by Neela Borvankar, associate professor in the Hindi department of Abasaheb Garware College.

“Kunwar Narain is a great poet, philosopher and guide and has been conferred with many prestigious national and international wards. This award is a token of our admiration as his work has been accepted and appreciated globally,” said Atul Kulkarni, senior associate and coordinator of Art and Music Foundation.

“This award is about honouring and celebrating individual contribution that has made an impact,

influence and has added value to
society. It is also an attempt to
motivate young artistes to achieve excellence,” said Kulkarni.

Last year, this award was given to renowned violinist, Padma Bhushan N Rajam, by renowned yoga exponent, Padma Bhushan BKS Iyengar.
