Taking a stand contradictory to the party, Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) city unit president, Vandana Chavan, on Tuesday requested chief minister Prithviraj Chavan to “reconsider and reverse” the decision to allow 4% construction in the proposed bio-diversity park (BDP).

NCP leaders have been opposing the ‘no construction allowed in BDP’ policy and were demanding that construction should be allowed on at least 4% of the plot.

NCP spokesperson Ankush Kakade told reporters on Tuesday that it was decided in the meeting of party corporators that 4% construction should be allowed in the BDP. The same decision was also taken recently at a meeting attended by party leader and deputy chief minister, Ajit Pawar.

Chavan has been consistently supporting the proposal of BDP in the development plan (DP) of the merged villages sent by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to the state government in December 2005. Green activists have been insisting that no construction be permitted in the BDP.

Hence, Chavan sent a letter to the chief minister requesting to “reconsider and reverse the stand to honour the decision of the people”.

Interestingly, Chavan has signed the “urgent” letter as former mayor and former member of the legislative council (MLC), Pune, instead of NCP city president.

She said in the letter, “About 90,000 Punekars had filed their say that there should be no construction on the hills; so also the municipal corporation had passed the resolution to that effect by a majority. Not honouring the decision of the people and the local body is not in keeping with the basic tenets of the Constitution of India.”

She said that Mohan Dharia, Anu Aga, Madhav Gadgil, Jayant Naralikar and several other veterans in the city have backed the movement. “Dharia and Aga are presently out of town, but they have asked me to kindly request you to reconsider and reverse your stand.”
