A Pune-based hotelier and his family have been dragged to court by his wife for alleged dowry demands and physical abuse. The wife, a Netherlands citizen, has urged the HC to cancel the anticipatory bail granted to her husband and in-laws by a Sessions court.

Mona Singh, 25, a citizen of the Netherlands, moved back to her parent’s home in Amsterdam after she was allegedly harassed by her husband Aakash and his family, owners of a famous five-star hotel in Pune.

In her petition filed in HC, Mona has alleged that her husband had demanded a BMW from her father before marriage. “As the car was not available, my father sold one of his showrooms and gave Aakash one lakh Euro,” Mona’s petition states.

She adds that in January 2007, Aakash’s father bought an E-280 Mercedes with the money. “They then demanded Rs3 lakh, which was paid along with diamond jewellery a day before the marriage,” her petition states.

Mona was a student of Business Management at the University of Amsterdam, and her father is a reputed businessman in Netherlands.

Mona and Aakash got engaged in October 2006 after their families met at a wedding in Delhi. Aakash visited Holland in November 2006, and the two got married in November 2007.

“My troubles began in January 2008. I was ill-treated by my husband and in-laws. On three occasions my father-in-law tried to molest me by entering my bedroom when I was asleep,” Mona’s petition says.

Mona then lodged a complaint with the Pune police in March 2008 alleging dowry demands and physical abuse under the IPC, and Dowry Protection Act. She had also written to the Pune police commissioner.

A Sessions court first refused to grant interim anticipatory bail to the accused on March 7, 2008, saying allegations against the accused were serious and heinous. But, on March 14, 2008, the court granted bail.

Mona then moved the HC, seeking cancellation of the bail. The case came up for hearing on Friday, where Justice S C Dharmadhikari suggested both families sort out the dispute.

Aakash’s counsel informed the court that Mona had been making unreasonable demands. “Matrimonial disputes cannot be converted into a money-making business,” he said. Mona’s counsel refuted the allegations.

Justice Dharmadhikari will now hear the matter in Chamber on Monday.
