Pune civic body's octori collection logs on IT success

Computers have become the single largest contributor of octroi to the PMC in the first five months of the current financial year 2011-12.

Reflecting the increasing dominance of IT (information technology) and ITES (IT enabled services) in the economy of the city, computers have become the single largest contributor of octroi to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in the first five months of the current financial year 2011-12.

Octroi department incharge, Hemant Nikam, said that out of the total PMC octroi collection from April 1 to August 31 in 2011-12 of Rs500 crore, computer share was Rs40 crore.

The rate of octroi on computers is 3.5% of the price.

Nikam said octroi collection on computers was the largest during the last financial year also.

Octroi collection on computers is the single largest and exceeds that on building material or machinery (Rs20 crore each).

Highlighting the prominence of IT and electronics-telecommunication, the octroi collection on electronic items and cellphone are Rs26 crore and Rs15 crore respectively.

Octroi collection on electronics follows that on computers. The other items on which there is significant growth are: wine and liquor (Rs16 crore), cigarette (Rs9 crore), clothing (Rs16 crore) and medicine-surgical devices (Rs7 crore).

Nikam said the octroi collection in the first five months of the current financial year has exceeded the figure calculated in the corresponding period last year by Rs75 crore.

He said the department will achieve the target of Rs1,323 crore set for this financial year.

There has been significant increase in octroi collection on gold and silver in 2011-12.

The collection figure on precious metals for first six months of 2010-11 was Rs1.75 crore, while it has reached Rs7.5 crore in the first five months of 2011-12.

The PMC collected octroi on gold and silver of Rs7.5 crore for six years from 2003 to 2009. But, since 2009, the figure has been Rs12 crore.
