Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan will meet environmentalists and civic activists in the city on the proposed biodiversity park (BDP) in the 23 merged villages in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Saturday.

President of the city unit of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and environmentalist, Vandana Chavan, has taken the initiative for the meeting. According to her, environmentalists, industrialists, representatives of NGOs, urban planning experts and labour union leaders will participate in the meeting.

Prominent activists invited to the meet include Mohan Dharia, BG Deshmukh, Madhav Gadgil, Anu Aga, Atul Kirloskar, Pradeep Bhargava, Mukesh Malhotra, Anita Beninger, Satish Khot, Aarti Kirloskar, Sanskriti Menon, Vivek Velankar, Sujit Patwardhan, Vinod Bodhankar, Rajeev Raje, Mukta Manohar, Ajit Abhyankar, Nitin

Pawar and Commander (retd) Deepak Naik.
The BDP is proposed on 4,000 acres in the 23 merged villages on hill-tops and hill slopes. It has become a bone of contention in the approval of the DP.

As per the original proposal, no construction was to be allowed in the BDP. However, the NCP, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have supported construction on up to 8% area, while retaining the land with owners and making planting of trees mandatory.

The Congress party has been consistently opposing any construction in the
BDP with its insistence on Green DP.

The Shiv Sena has opposed construction in the BDP. Opponents of the BDP point to the huge cost of land acquisition and danger of slums creeping in the BDP area. Supporters insist on environmental benefits of having a BDP around the city.
