In a bid to solve the meter tampering problem, the state transport department has suggested getting electronic meters installed in autorickshaws at the pre-delivery stage, probably by the manufacturers or dealers.

“This will cut down the problem of cost and will not be an additional burden to the auto driver, who has to buy e-meters separately. If this is done, the cost will be borne during the initial buying period,” said a senior transport department official.

“But, this will require initiative from auto and e-meter manufacturers or dealers and we will have to get them on one table,” the official added.

While the department is pushing for e-meters for autorickshaws and taxis, the unions have been opposing the move claiming that the expensive e-meter will be an additional burden for the drivers and would involve hefty maintenance costs.

“If an e-meter gets damaged, it takes days to be fixed and an auto driver cannot afford to be out of business for so many days," said a union leader.
