In a major crackdown on the business of illegal LPG cylinders, the officers of the special squad of Mumbai police on Tuesday raided two places in Saki Naka and Powai. Police seized around 75 illegal cylinders from these places.

According to the police sources, on receipt of specific information, raids were carried out and. police have arrested nearly a dozen people involved in the business.

“These centres illegally procure LPG cylinders meant for domestic and commercial purposes. They then transfer the gas from domestic cylinders to commercial cylinders and sell them at high prices. Those arrested have been booked under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and Essential Commodities Act,” said assistant commissioner of police, Vasant Dhoble.

Another senior police official added that, this is a well-organised, money generating syndicate wherein suppliers and consumers are cheated. “The arrested persons include godown keepers and owners of these illegal units. We are making inquiries as to who were their customers,” said the officer.

“There are several such illegal dens which have come under the police scanner. We have a whole list of people involved in this illegal business and action will be taken against them soon,” said the officer, requesting anonymity.
