A Bandra housewife called up police commissioner Sanjeev Dayal at 6am on Wednesday to save herself and her three children from the wrath of her estranged husband, after the Kherwadi police refused to act. Fifteen minutes after 39-year-old Shabeena Shaikh’s call, she was provided police protection, an FIR was lodged and her husband was arrested.

When her husband and his ‘goons’ had allegedly ransacked her flat on Tuesday evening, she claimed the Kherwadi police had refused to take action. “I was left with no option but to commit suicide, as the local police were not taking action. Out of frustration, I called up the commissioner on his cell phone early in the morning. He immediately responded,” Shabeena said.

Dayal confirmed the call. Senior police inspector UK Rathod of Kherwadi police station denied callousness and claimed the case was registered the moment it was brought to his notice.

Shabeena has been married to Rafique, 42, for 17 years. The couple developed differences four years back and their case is pending in a family court. She said her husband, who now lives at Mira Road, wanted them out of their Bandra (East) residence, which is undergoing redevelopment and could become a pot of gold.

Shabeena claimed in the FIR that on Tuesday evening, Rafique accompanied by family members and ‘goons’ of a builder barged into their flat and ransacked it. “It was such a sad sight to see my father doing all this to us. It made me cry,” said 16-year-old Bushra, while trying to pacify her weeping 12-year-old brother Zaed.

Shabeena alleged that when she went to the Kherwadi police station, Rathod refused to even provide her with security.
Rafique’s family refused to comment.
