Keeping in mind the threat posed by terrorist activities during the forthcoming Ganesh festival, the city police has asked the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to set up 1,500 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras by using ward level development funds of the 149 corporators.

Deputy police commissioner Makarand Ranade was speaking to members of various Ganesh Mandals at a meeting organised by the PMC in the city considering the threat of terrorist activities, especially on the backdrop of bomb blast in Mumbai on July 13.

The police department is focused on ensuring total security during the festival.

He said that the CCTVs would be very useful for electronic surveillance during the festival.

Ranade said there are a total 149 corporators in the PMC. If the civic body installs about 10 cameras in each of the 144 municipal wards then the estimated cost for these cameras would be about Rs30 lakh.

He said that once the PMC takes lead in setting up cameras in the city, then the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) would also take the initiative.

The police official said that during the Ganapati festival, the police department puts restriction on movement of vehicles considering the crowd. The civic body should make arrangements for parking vehicles on its grounds and on grounds of private schools during the festival in areas like Tilak Road and Shivajinagar.

There are 3,224 Ganapati Mandals in Pune as per the police record. The festival would be celebrated from September 1 to September 11.

Chairman of standing committee of the PMC Ganesh Bidkar said that as per the existing rules, the ward development funds of corporators could not be used for setting up cameras. The state government should give permission for such utilisation.

Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal, deputy mayor Prasanna Jagtap, MLA Bapu Pathare, group leader of Shiv Sena Sham Deshpande and deputy police commissioner Vishwas Pandhare were present.
