The standing committee and the civic administration of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) want to build a flyover on the road to Warje but the local corporators oppose the move tooth and nail.

Local corporators who are opposing the project include Rajabhau Barate, Ashok Harnaval, Sunil Kambale, Ashvini Kadam and Santosh Arade. They have already written to the standing committee asking for reconsideration of the decision.

The standing committee had, in its meeting on February 22, sanctioned Rs41 crore to construct a flyover connecting Warje Road to Universal Chowk via Cummins College Chowk. This flyover was proposed to reduce traffic congestion.

However, Barate, who belongs to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, strongly objected to the project on the grounds that the flyover is not necessary there.

He told DNA that the area in question has a 100 metres road sanctioned in the development plan (DP).

“Barring some patches, the Pune Municipal Corporation has managed to acquire almost all the land required and work for the road would begin in the next few months,” he said.

According to Barate, the DP road would be more than sufficient to meet the traffic requirements of the area.

“The development plan road has been planned keeping in view 100 years of traffic scenario,” he said, adding that a flyover, if built in the area, would create traffic snarls.

“Our area would have to face all accompanying problems that the construction of the flyover might bring for the next six years.

Although, in principle, I do not oppose flyovers, one is not necessary here,” he said.
