Vocation education will become compulsory at the
secondary school level, but only if the state government accepts the recommendations of a group of educationists.

Currently, only 75,180 students are trained in vocational education up to Secondary School Certificate (SSC). The state government plans to increase the number up to 1.4 lakh students by 2022.

On the eve of Education Day, the directorate of vocational education training (DVET) presented its paper on vocational education at school level at a conference on Productive Skills in School Curriculum organised by the higher and technical education department at the Yashvantrao Chavan Pratishthan at Nariman Point.

“We can recommend the state to make vocational education certificate mandatory for students to get their SSC certificate,” said JD Bhutange, director, DVET, on Friday.

According to the paper, schools will have to provide workspace and slot proper time for the vocational education in the timetable.
The schools will also be responsible for creating awareness about vocational education with orientation programmes to encourage all students, and not just those who are weak in studies, to take up a vocation.

The paper elaborated that vocational education will be supported with interactive and practical training module and the curriculum designed keeping in mind the current market needs.
If it not possible for each school to own workshops, a centralised location will be identified where all students can avail the training facility so that infrastructure can be optimised.

There will be periodical feedback to review and maintain quality. The theory lectures can be held at schools and practicals can be conducted at business centres and factories.

“As one of the main objectives of this project is to provide skilled workforce, industry participation will be encouraged,” said Bhutange.

Certification of the vocational skill education will be awarded by competent authority only after successful assessment.
