A 45-year-old police constable attached to the marine unit of Mumbai police drowned off Colaba jetty in the wee hours of Monday. He reportedly fell off while trying to jump from one boat to the other. He was patrolling the Ghariyal Godi dock area near Yellow Gate on board Indrayani, a speedboat.

According to the police, following the collision of the ships, Yellow Gate police had requested the Versova Sagri personnel to patrol the area. The deceased, identified as Ramesh Tukaram More, and five other constables were asked to patrol the area on Sunday night.

“Due to the rough sea, their boat had come back to the docks. While his colleagues went to the cabin around 2.45am for a nap, More made an effort to reach the shore. There were several boats that were anchored and More reportedly jumped from one boat to the other to reach the shore. But he slipped and fell into the water between two boats,” said senior police inspector JJ Jadhav of Versova Sagri police station.

Life guards fished out the body around 1pm on Monday and it was sent to JJ Hospital.

The constable’s family and colleagues said More had been transferred to the Sagri police station from Bhoiwada police station seven months ago. They claimed that even when he did not know how to swim, More was sent aboard the patrol boat more than once. More is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
