With the DNA test conducted on a second child proving negative, Mohan and Mohini Nerurkar, who lost their four-day-old baby nine months ago at Sion Hospital, still await an end to their misery.

Earlier this week, the state government had told the Bombay high court that the DNA test report of a male child found in May were awaited. The child was found abandoned on a train.

On Wednesday, the court was told that the test report was negative. “This time we were very hopeful that the report will be positive,” said a dejected Mohan. “But since it is not our child, we will have to wait longer. We have no choice.” The Nerurkars’ advocates, Jamshed Mistry and Amit Karkhanis, said the police had called to identify four children found by them till date.

State director-general of police (DGP) SS Virk will now supervise the search for the boy who was allegedly stolen from the BMC-run hospital on January 1. Directing the DGP to monitor the probe, the court said it had a ‘legitimate expectation’ from the DGP as he had helped to trace a five-year-old boy, who was missing for nine months, in just 10 days.

Earlier, the court had come down heavily on the police and said that if they took their jobs seriously, they would have found the child. The court had appreciated Virk’s efforts in tracing the other child and remarked that he should be in-charge of all such cases.

DNA tests were conducted only on two of the children found, as the couple had said the other two could not have been theirs. The test report received from the forensic science laboratory at Kalina on Wednesday was that of the second child.
