Valentine’s Day is one of the most awaited occasions in the year for youngsters. Popular as a day for couples who are in love, today’s collegians have a completely different take on it.

Like for this group of standard XI (arts) girls from Fergusson College, V-Day will be marked by exchanging gifts with each other and spending time together. “For us, Valentine’s Day would be about our group. We will celebrate it with gifts and chocolates. However, there will be no flowers because they do not last long,” said Janhvi Tamchikar.

Aditi Thakarey, who belongs to the same group, said, “Valentine’s is not just for couples; it can be for anyone we truly love. I am also planning a small surprise for my parents after I spend the day in college with my friends.” Similarly, Vaishnavi Amrutwad and Priya Aderi also felt that being with friends would be the best part of this day.

Opinions on V-Day celebrations differed across Fergusson. While some said it’s not something that needs to be celebrated, others felt political parties had created an air of fear among students and were playing moral police even when it came to celebrating with friends.

A group of students from Symbiosis, who are pursuing standard XI in commerce, have planned a unique way of celebrating this day. “We thought of the best thing to do on V-Day. We will go for a movie and then roam around the city laughing at couples who spend only this day together,” said Payal Jagwani. She and her friends find it funny that couples meet up on this day to express their love. “I think everyone should spend time with friends every day, why only V-Day? So, we are going to chill out and enjoy like we always do,” said Divit Nahata. Adwitya Sharan, Shivam Singh Rathod and Tanmay Mulay agree completely with their friends.
