The art gallery at the JJ School of Arts might soon be made available to outsiders, if a proposal made by a delegation of artists is accepted by the state government.

The group has asked the government to allow them to showcase their exhibition at the gallery, which is currently used only by students. They have also asked the state to improve the facilities at the gallery and to bring it at par with the Jehangir Art gallery.

A delegation of artists met the state higher education minister, Rajesh Tope last week about their demands. Dighambar Chichkar, one of the artists, said, “The art gallery is currently used once a year for students’ exhibitions. Though they have space available, the lighting and setting are not up to the mark. Once they develop it, the gallery can be used by professionals.”

Chichkar added, “In 1970s, the state government had formed an Arts’ Council, which was supposed to be an advisory body for arts faculty. The state arts’ council was meant to advise art institutes on several aspects including curriculum, courses, qualification of the faculty and so on. However, the council that was set up in 1970s is almost non-functional. It needs to be reinstated again.”

According to Vidya Chauhan, member of the delegation, JJ School of Arts, which was once considered as a premier institute, has not lived up to the mark in recent years. “There is a shortage of staff in all the faculties. The minister has assured us that he will set up a committee to inquire in the matter and will also take measures to improve the conditions,” said Chauhan.

The other demands also included waiving an entry fee to participate in the Maharashtra State Arts Exhibition.
