Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik recently took an audit of unused projects of the city police since it became functional, including a police maternity ward in Worli and an indoor firing range at Naigaum.

Police sources revealed that not a single operation has taken place in the maternity ward meant for the police and their families, and there was absolutely no firing practice taking place in the firing range.

“The commissioner had visited the police maternity ward at the Local Arms Headquarters in Worli and discovered that the building was lying underutilised. While the dispensary does receive a few patients, the maternity ward has never been used. Not a single delivery has taken place there ever since it was built,” revealed an Indian Police Service official, requesting anonymity.

He added that the commissioner made an observatory note last week in this regard and had directed the officer concerned to shut down the ward, since there is already a maternity ward at the Nagpada police hospital. “It has been learnt that policemen are either using Nagpada police hospital or private hospitals for the delivery of their children, due to which the maternity ward at Worli has remained unused. If the ward is closed, then the staff working there might get shifted to Nagpada hospital,” said the officer.

Another unused project that has come under the scanner is the small weapon firing practice range at the Naigaum headquarters of the police.

“The indoor firing range has not been used since the past many years. The commissioner also found that there were no moving object for firing practice and the noise level was very high. The officer who looks after the range has been asked to make necessary changes and submit a report in this regard,” the officer added.
