Kate Middleton’s Post-Nuptial Depression (PND) soon after her wedding with Prince Williams may not be a rarity, say senior psychiatrists in Mumbai. According to them, many desi brides too suffer from this condition.

Senior psychiatrist Dr Anjali Chhabria lays the blame squarely on unrealistic expectations. “When a woman imagines ‘the perfect wedding day’, it is almost impossible to live up to. The resulting disappointment could be a key factor in triggering PND,” she said.

According to Chhabria, the post-marriage adjustment can only aggravate this issue.

Dr Chhabria is not the only one, others like Dr Yusuf Matcheswala, head of Masina hospital’s psychiatry department and former president of the Bombay Psychiatric Society, points out that two out of every five brides suffers from PND. “While awareness is making people recognise and seek treatment for PND now,” he warns. “Here the bride is supposed to adjust to the in-laws and the extended family, this takes its toll,” he added.

Consultant psychiatrist, Hinduja Hospital, Dr Vasant Mundra insists that the tendency to take on too much is the trigger. “Often the bride-to-be also plans the wedding. This inability to delegate is one of primary causes that leads to PND.”

Geetha Nair, 26, whose wedding videos and album have her with red, swollen eyes, should know what Mundra is talking about. “I did my make-up, mehndi, hair and sari draping myself. I began helping my cousins and my mom to get ready and realised I had 15 minutes to get ready,” she recounts.

While these cases show good prognosis after counselling and medication, wellness experts like Dr Fabian Almeida say that in the long run people will have to socialise a switch from the material to the real.
