The Dahi Handi celebrations in Thane this year were lost in the loud sound systems and ear deafening noise levels. Last week, the Bombay high court had asked the government agencies, Dahi Handi mandals and Ganapati mandals in Thane to come together to discuss the issue of noise pollution.
Even while the government agencies appealed to the public to adhere to the noise pollution norms, the reality was not in favour of environment-friendly Dahi Handi celebrations.
Dr Mahesh Bedekar, who had filed public interest litigation (PIL) for strict implementation of noise pollution norms, said that he found that the noise levels were beyond permitted levels.Even the municipal corporation did not bother about the increase in noise levels.
A message from the TMC’s public relations office stated that it was not responsible for controlling noise pollution. According to police sources, no cases of noise pollution have been registered so far.
The govindas from Thane, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and neighbouring areas, wearing Gandhi caps in a show of support for Anna, made a beeline to the various Dahi Handis.
Sanskruti Prathishtan Dahi Handi saw actors John Abraham, Udita Goswami, Ameesha Patel, and Neha Dhupia in attendance. While Sangharsh Dahi Handi at Panchpakhadi saw more than 160 mandals registering for participating in the event. The castellers from Spain were one of the main attractions at the event here.
The Tembhi Naka Dahi Handi, one of the oldest Dahi Handis, attracted mandals with their golden handi. The entertainment included a performance by Surekha Punekar, well known lavni dancer.
