Residents of Moshi have opposed the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's (PCMC) plan to shift its common bio-medical waste treatment facility (CBWTF) from Pimpri to Moshi.

The Nagari Hakka Kriti Samiti (NHKS) has written to the PCMC with the Samiti's president, Sunil Gaikwad, warning that an agitation would be launched if the facility is shifted.

The committee members said residents of Gandharvnagari, Indralok Colony, Adarshnagar, Khandeshnagar, Tapkirnagar and Moshi sectors No. 4 to 9 were already suffering from the stench of the existing garbage depot at Moshi. The civic administration had again proposed to shift the CWBTF to the Moshi site. The move will create hazardous health problems for residents.

The PCMC decided to shift its CBWTF to Moshi recently. The PCMC had installed the facility at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) and appointed Pasco Environmental Solution Private Limited to maintain the incinerator in 2006. The PCMC made it mandatory for all healthcare establishments to make use of the facility. There are more than 5,000 healthcare establishments in the PCMC area and every day, nearly 600 kg bio-waste is generated and disposed at the facility at YCMH.
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) served a notice to the PCMC on April 23, 2009 to shift the facility from the YCMH. After two years, the civic administration found a location on a one-acre land. It has been approved by the MPCB.

The proposal was tabled before the PCMC general body for approval on November 19. The corporators objected to the appointment of the same private agencies on the proposed site so the mayor deferred the proposal for a month.
