No leave for BMC staff till the end of monsoon

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) employees will not be getting any leave during the monsoon months. Those deployed in monsoon-related duties will not even be allowed any emergency leave. The diktat has come from the civic chief, Swadhin Kshatriya.

With the rains likely to hit the city between June 8 and 20, the civic administration is on a high alert to deal with any related disaster. “Every department of the BMC has been put on monsoon duty.

Every ward office will have to play a role in relief work (in the event of a disaster). No employee will be granted leave till the monsoon is over,” Kshatriya said on Wednesday.

He requested the employees not to ask for leave. “If any staff engaged in monsoon duty goes on leave, it will affect the functioning of the department concerned and put pressure on colleagues, who would anyway be stretched to their fullest during the rains,” Kshatriya said. “So, employees are advised not to ask for leave. Leaves granted to some employees in advance stand cancelled during this period.”

The BMC will coordinate with the navy, the army, the air force and the police in conducting rescue operations at times of crisis. Six rescue teams, each comprising six navy divers, will be deployed at the most flood-prone areas of the city. The BMC will also keep contact with the national meteorological department, New Delhi.

Three teams of the National Disaster Response Force personnel will arrive in the city by June 15.
