Even as the city celebrates International Women’s Day today, a Right to Information (RTI) application has revealed that not a single case of atrocities against women was registered in 36 police stations in the city between 2007 and 2010.

Shalini Thackeray, vice-president of the women’s wing of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), had filed the application. She had asked for the number of such cases registered at 48 out of 90 police stations that come under the Mumbai police commissioner’s jurisdiction.

The 36 police stations include those in areas such as Dadar, Shivaji Park, Borivli, etc. The information obtained showed that only 11 out of the 48 police stations registered such cases in the past three years. Interestingly, there were only 329 cases of atrocities against women in the period. One police station did not have proper information.

“The information was startling. It indicates that police stations in the city are not registering cases of atrocities against women. How is it possible that 36 police stations did not register a single such case from 2007 to 2010? This either means that police stations are apathetic or that women are being threatened not to file such cases,” said Thackeray.

She added that the query had particularly asked about the laws meant for the security of women. “The reply included the Domestic Violence Act and 12 articles from the Indian Penal Code [IPC] pertaining to crimes like rape,” she said.

She added that serious measures need to be taken to ensure that these are not the reasons why cases are not being registered.

“The authorities should cross-check the information because of its startling nature,” she said.

As women across the city celebrate International Women’s Day today, the question that remains is whether the city is really safe for women or it is fear that prevents them from filing complaints about atrocities.
