Despite desperate measures by the Mumbai police, including special squads to deal with the issue, increased nakabandi and regular patrolling, chain-snatching incidents refuse to stop.

In the last 24 hours, nine chain-snatching cases were reported in the city, five in the western suburbs. In all cases, the accused used the same modus operandi, i.e. two persons on a motorcycle approached the victim from their back and the pillion rider snatched the gold chain before speeding away.

In the first incident that took place on Sunday evening in the Grant Road area, a 65-year old Roshan Bharocha was walking on the road when two unidentified persons on motorcycle snatched her gold chain worth Rs93,000.

Yet another chain-snatching incident took place at Dadar’s Babasaheb Worli Chowk on Sunday night, when the victim, Veena Thakkar, 35, was headed for her Parel resident. Two bikers snatched her gold chain worth Rs 50000 and fled. No passers-by could take down the bike’s number. Around the same time at Ghatkopar, Prema Shetty, 56, was about to board an auto rickshaw near her Pant Nagar residence, when two bikers aged between 20 to 25 years snatched her mangalsutra worth Rs1 lakh and fled. A 39-year-old Rekha Tendulkar approached the Govandi police after two people on bike snatched her gold chain worth Rs30,000 in the Govandi area.

Five other chain-snatching incidents took place in the western suburbs, from Bandra to Borivli. Two women were robbed of their gold chain worth Rs1.6 lakh in two separate incidents in Goregaon and Borivli on Sunday morning.
