Residents of Shivshambo Society in Thergaon continued to be in a state of shock on Sunday over the tragic death of 3-year-old Amruta Dnyaneshwar Vavdhane, who was killed by a speeding car on Thursday at 6pm.

“Amruta was a very playful and talkative girl. We miss her deeply,” was the common sentiment of the people in this lower middle class society. According to the Hinjewadi police, Amruta, daughter of a hardware shop employee, was playing near her residence on Thursday evening when she was run over by an unidentified speeding car. Some residents of the society and passers-by tried to chase the car, but were unsuccessful. The society does not have any boundary wall and is open to outside traffic.

The society was engulfed in grief on Sunday, three days after the incident. One of the children in the society, Imran Shaikh, said, “I had returned from school and was going to a shop when I saw the mishap. I saw a speeding car, which went by my side and hit Amruta. She suffered serious injuries on her head. I screamed, but the driver fled from the spot,” Shaikh, who is yet to recover from the shock, said.

The grieving Vavdhane family took Amruta’s body to their village in Latur district on Thursday night to perform the last rites.

Their neighbour, Subhamati Mhaske said, “On Thursday, Amruta’s mother had gone to an adjacent building on some errand. When she returned home, Amruta had asked her for her afternoon snacks. It was around this time that she stepped out of home and the mishap took place.” The Mhaske family was not at home when the incident happened. When they returned, they saw Amruta’s body being taken to hospital by residents of the society.

“When I saw her body, I was shocked. It was then that we called her father and informed him about the accident,” Mhaske said.
