Navi Mumbai residents were coming back from a lounge; cops suspect it to be a drunk driving case
It was a tragic Sunday for the families of four youngsters from Navi Mumbai who lost their lives after the speeding car they were travelling in lost control and rammed into a tree and a huge concrete structure on Palm Beach Road, Nerul. Onlookers said the impact was so severe that the tree split into two and some bottles from the car fell on the ground. The police suspect it to be a case of drunk driving.
Rakesh Chavan, 22, Sunny Sharma, 22, Karandeep Sandhu, 18, and Nilesh Bhat, 18, were returning in a black Honda Accord (MH01 MA9496) from an overnight party at Indulge Lounge, Belapur, when the speeding car lost control and swerved opposite Namdev Bhagat lake on Palm Beach Road. The police said the boys were at the lounge till 5.30am. The police suspect Chavan, who owned the car, was in the driver's seat.
While Chavan, Sandhu and Bhat died at the spot, Sharma who showed signs of being alive was taken to Dr DY Patil hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries immediately after reaching the hospital. The other bodies were taken to NMMC hospital.
"The car was completely damaged because of the impact. It is suspected be a case of drunk driving. It is not yet clear who was driving the car. We are still investigating the matter," a police official told DNA. "The accident took place because of speeding," said RL Chaphekar, senior police inspector at the Nerul police station.
While Sandhu and Bhat were residents of Koparkhairane, Sharma and Chavan lived in Vashi and Kamothe respectively. "Sandhu and Bhat were pursuing their HSC through correspondence from Fr Agnel Multipurpose School and Modern College in Vashi," said Chaphekar. Sharma was a mechanic while Chavan assisted his father in his business.
