Chief minister Narendra Modi on Friday ignored the request by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) to support implementation of Goods & Services Tax (GST) and 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail.

"GST is very crucial for development of the country. GST has been implemented in other countries and the fears associated with it have turned out to be unfounded. Gujarat's support to GST will help in its implementation," FICCI president Harsh Mariwala said in his remarks during an interactive session with the CM.

The FICCI president also urged Modi to change his stand on FDI in retail, saying that FDI in retail will contribute significantly to the reforms.

"The rollback of 100% FDI in retail has dented the country's image internationally. We believe that FDI should be allowed in retail, even if it is 49% in multi-brand retail. We request you to support FDI in retail," Mariwala said.

The CM, however, didn't even respond to the twin requests.
In his address, Modi outlined state government's vision and policies for balanced development. He said that the state was focusing equally on industry, agriculture and services sector for growth.

"Instead of any particular sector or region, we adopted a holistic approach for development. This strategy has paid off," he said.
Modi pointed out that while the country was struggling to achieve 2.5% to 3% growth in agriculture, the state had achieved over 10% growth in the past several years. He also spoke about measures in various other fields and sectors.

The CM said that the government was striving hard to meet the higher expectations. He told the audience that the government was working on policies to encourage value addition in farm sector.

Modi also said that the state was keen to encourage defence equipment manufacturing,   which would result in savings of billions of dollars, and also spoke about the initiatives in renewable energy. He also called upon the industrialists to strive to achieve zero defect manufacturing, which he said, would boost Brand Gujarat.
