Murder convict flees Yerawada jail

A 36-year-old murder convict, serving life term in the Yerawada open jail, managed to give the police the slip from the jail on Sunday noon.

The jail authorities came to know about the escape after the routine headcount was carried out at 6 pm. The absconding inmate, Saleem Gulab Pathan, hails from Ratnagiri village in Panhala taluka of Kolhapur district.

In 2002, a court in Pandharpur had convicted him to life imprisonment for murdering his wife.

A complaint was registered by Maruti Watmare, a prison guard at Yerawada police station.
