A day before Eid-ul-Adha, a Malvi breed goat from Indore was tagged the most expensive goat in the city after he was sold for an astounding Rs4 lakh.

In 2010, the most expensive goat in the city was priced at Rs.1.5 lakh.

"Last year, too, the Malvi breed had trumped over the Sirohi and Jamunapari goats, which are brought from Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh respectively, but for less than half the price," said Aslam Qureshi, president of the All India Sheep and Goat Breeders and Dealers' Association at Deonar.

Qureshi said that though the number of goats brought to the city for Eid-ul-Adha has dropped this year, sales were good at Deonar.
“We are likely to see 50,000 more goats being sold this year as compared to last year. The total figure may cross 2 lakh,” added Qureshi.

But, there have been not many buyers at Bakri Adda at NM Joshi Marg near Byculla and the slump had forced many owners to slash prices.

“In 2010, we had sold around 1,000 goats, but this year, we have sold only 300. As today is the last day of sales, we reduced the prices and are even bargaining," said Zunaid Dadamia Qureshi, a goat trader at Bakri Adda.

According to Qureshi, prices of goats have been slashed from Rs1,000 to Rs6,000 depending upon the breed.

“Unlike Deonar, the prices are cheaper at Bakri Adda because of the quality. Goats here range from Rs6,000 to Rs20,000. The bargain is more when the price is high. We have to reduce the price because if we have to take them back home, we will incur losses," added Sohail Qureshi, another trader.

Even buyers are wary.

Rahim Shaikh said: "I usually buy six goats. But, this year, as the prices are high, I bought only three from Deonar. I have only come to check out the goats at the Bakri Adda."

Byculla resident Salman Nursumar, who was scouting for a good deal at Bakri Adda, was happy that he had no time earlier to buy a goat.

“Every year, we go to Deonar, but I have heard that goats are expensive there this year. We have come here with a budget of Rs20,000 for two goats, but hope to bargain and get them for Rs16,000."
