The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on behalf of the fire brigade, has appealed all the citizens and corporate houses to check electric supply cables regularly in order to avoid fatal fire incidents in the city.

The fire incidents are continuously on the rise and all major fires took place mainly because of short-circuit and faulty power supply system. There were 215 incidents of fire between December 15,2010 and January 15, 2011 in which one person lost life and 10 others were injured.
According to the fire brigade report submitted to the BMC standing committee, there were 103 fire incidents during the second half of December and 112 in the first half of January. Maximum fires broke out because of faulty electric supply.
The report also said that all the major fires broke out during the night or early in the morning.
“The fires occurred during the night or early in the morning due to faulty electric cables. So the people should check it regularly. Use circuit breaker in the system, which will help in preventing short-circuits,” said chief fire officer Uday Tatkare.
Rahul Shewale, standing committee chairman, also has requested citizens to check their electric supply system and asked to follow the guidelines prescribed by the power supplier to avoid such incidents.
“Sometimes the power companies also neglect their responsibility. It is the company’s responsibility to check faulty wires and replace them. It has to replace faulty cables within a certain period of time,” said a senior fire official. The officer also added that the fire officer concerned should follow up with the company to ensure safety of property and lives in commercial establishments.
