A speeding dumper truck hit a bike on Jogeshwari-Vikroli Link Road and ran over the pillion rider, killing her.

On Saturday night, Jogendra Pabal, 34, and his wife Suman, 32, were returning to their Andheri residence when the truck tried to overtake them at Pratap Nagar near Fantasy Land. The truck hit the bike, throwing both of them off the bike.

“Suman fell right under the truck and the rear wheel ran over on her head. She died on the spot. Jogendra suffered minor injuries,” said senior police inspector BS Jadhav of the Meghwadi police station.

“The driver tried to run away, but was caught in a nakabandi at Jogeshwari. Passersby informed the police control room about the accident and the Meghwadi police rushed on the spot,” said police officer.

Suman’s body was sent for a post-mortem to RN Cooper Hospital, while Jogendra was discharged after treatment.

“The dumper truck driver was speeding and he tried to overtake me three times from Powai until MIDC. I was trying to keep a distance from the truck, but when we reached Fantasy Land, he suddenly tried to overtake me from the left and hit my bike,” said Jogendra, who works in the housekeeping department at a private firm.

“We have arrested the driver, Datta Waghe, and charged him with rash and negligent driving. We will produce him in court on Monday,” said Jadhav.
