Disrupted train services on the Central Railway and Harbour lines during morning peak hours on Wednesday created undue stress for several students who reached their exam centres late or in some cases, didn’t reach at all.

A total of 30 examinations were being conducted by Mumbai University on Wednesday.

Sachin Tawade, a Thane resident and first-year engineering student was to appear for a term test at Tasgaonkar College in Karjat. After he was stranded at the station for an unexpected amount of time, Tawade was certain he would not make it on time. Fortunately, aware of the adverse situation, authorities at his college decided to postpone the test by an hour. Students in other colleges faced a similar scare and reached their exam centres late, but were allowed extra time to finish their papers.

However, there were an unfortunate few who could not reach their exam centres at all. “Around 30-35 students of Masters of Science and Masters of Chemistry (part one), were recorded absent for the examination in four major centres. Other examinations also saw some absentees, but not as many. We have called for an urgent Board of Examinations meeting on Thursday to discuss the issue since many of these students may have been unable to reach their exam centres due to delayed train services,” said Subhash Deo, director of examinations, Mumbai University.

Deo added, “Many of these students may have been regular absentees. In the meeting, all these cases will be discussed to take a decision on the future course of action for those who were unable to appear for the examination due to the situation with the trains on Wednesday.”

“After learning about the issue with Central and Harbour railways, we immediately took the decision that if a student is reaching late to the examination centre due to train delays, s/he should be given the required extra time. The decision was taken far ahead of the examination and all exam centre heads were informed about the situation,” added Deo.
