Elopement by two consenting adults, or a case of kidnapping? This is the big question the Pydhonie police are trying to answer after the 23-year-old daughter of a steel trader in Dadar went missing along with a youth on February 15. The answer, as new details emerge, could be somewhere in between.

As of now, on the instance of the girl’s family, the police have registered a kidnapping case against the youth and his sister, an Ayurvedic doctor, for allegedly abetting the crime. The brother-sister duo has been been identified as Harsh Parmar, who runs a garment business, and Shweta, both residents of Dadar.

According to the police, the victim (name withheld on request) stays near VP Road and her father has an office in Pydhonie. “One February 15, the victim had come to her father’s office, and at around 6.15pm, she left saying that she is going home. But when she did not reach home till late, her family registered a missing person complaint with the police,” said police sub-inspector Kailash Bondre of the Pydhonie police station.

He added that Shweta and Harsh were known to the victims’ family and used to visit her house frequently. “Since the day the victim went missing, Harsh and Shweta are missing too. This made us believe that there is some connection between the sudden disappearances,” he said.

After preliminary investigations, the police made inquiries with Harsh’s friend Shailendra Purade, who confirmed that the victim had eloped with Harsh as her family was opposed to their relationship.

“On February 15, when the victim left her father’s office, Harsh and Shweta were waiting for her at a pre-decided location. They made her wear a burkha and took her to Borivli, where Purade was waiting in an Innova car,” said a police official, requesting anonymity.

The story then took a dramatic turn. “When the car reached Nashik, the girl changed her mind and decided to return home. Purade told us that this irked Harsh and Shweta, who did not allow her to make calls. Purade then drove the vehicle to Lucknow and returned after a few days. We have not arrested him as he knew Harsh only through a common friend and had no direct role in the elopement,” said Bondre, adding that the girl is still not traceable.
