The Mumbai crime branch officers arrested three members of a family for allegedly murdering their daughter-in-law and abandoning her body in Uttar Pradesh.

The accused, Harishankar Singh, 51, his wife Savita and son Nilesh, were evading arrest since past four months and the Silvasa police had announced a reward of Rs25,000 for any information about them.

According to the police, victim Neelam’s brother Pradeep Singh had been trying to contact his sister, staying with her in-laws in Silvasa. Whenever Pradeep insisted Neelam’s in-laws to let him speak to his sister, they would give him vague replies. Suspecting foul play, Pradeep lodged a kidnapping complaint with the Silvasa police on August 21.

“On August 28, Neelam’s decomposed body was found in a SUV in Jaunpur area of Uttar Pradesh. Since then the family went missing from their Silvasa residence. A month later, Neelam’s husband Priyesh surrendered before the Silvasa police, while other family members were untraceable,” said senior police inspector Dinesh Ahir of Kurla unit of crime branch.

“Investigations also revealed that, the accused had brought Neelam’s body to Thane Civil Hospital and tried to bribe officials there to issue a death certificate for Rs50,000, but the officials refused to do that. They then put the body in a car and drove from Thane to Varanasi and then Jaunpur,” said Ahir.

“On Monday we had received specific information that these wanted persons were staying in a guest house in Matunga. Accordingly we conducted a raid and arrested them. We will now hand them over to the Silvasa police for further investigations. This was a dowry death case,” Ahir said.
