A newly recruited police constable has been missing from the police training centre at Kalina since March. The family of the constable alleges that there is some foul play behind his disappearance.

Dnyandev Maruti Gaike, 30, a native of Nimgaon in Parbhandi district had joined he police force in August last year and had then come to the Kole Kalina police training centre in Vakola.

“My brother has served in the Indian Army for four years before joining the police,” said Dnyandev’s younger brother Nivrutti, a Parbhani-based farmer.

He explained that, Gaike had been in touch with his wife Shalu regularly over the phone. “After March 8, Shalu did not receive any calls from him, so she asked me to visit the training centre and check on him,” Nivrutti added.

However, what he learnt from the police training centre in Kalina shocked Nivrutti. “On March 27, the officials told me that Dnyandev had not reported to duty from March 8. When I asked them why his family was not informed about the disappearance they just gave me excuses,” added his brother.

Nivrutti then lodged a complaint with the Vakola police and since then has met joint commissioners SP Yadav and Rajneesh Seth and state home minister RR Patil, but they have not done anything more than giving him assurances, he alleges.

Nivrutti, in turn, was quizzed by the police about his brother habits, vices and any enmity that he might have had. “They also wondered if he could have been abducted by someone. My brother had worked with the army and was strong enough to tackle people. I suspect something foul, as we were not kept in the loop about his disappearance,” he said.

With Dnyandev’s disappearance, his family is suffering a major financial crisis as he was the only earning member. “I urge the senior police officers to help trace my brother,” said his brother.

Interestingly, as per the police, Dnyandev was last seen at the Dadar railway station on March 8, by a colleague. “He had left the training centre for a few days in the past too, but had returned after few days, this time too, we suspected that he would return back soon. We are probing the case from all possible angles,” said inspector general of police, law and order, Gulabrao Pol.
