Mumbai-based model and agent arrested for passport fraud

Twenty-year-old Mumbai-based model Jiya Ashok Chopra was arrested by the Bund Garden police, along with her agent Arvind Rajendra Bhat, for allegedly trying to forge documents to procure a passport.

Twenty-year-old Mumbai-based model Jiya Ashok Chopra was arrested by the Bund Garden police, along with her agent Arvind Rajendra Bhat, for allegedly trying to forge documents to procure a passport.

Chopra, a resident of Chitan Prathamesh Park in Andheri (West), and Bhat (32) also from Andheri were arrested on Friday.

Assistant commissioner of police MM Makandar told the media, "Chopra wanted to go abroad for a modelling assignment. Being a native of Delhi, she faced problems in arranging various documents essential for obtaining passport from Mumbai. So she approached Bhat, who further conspired with Pune-based passport agent Inayatali Hariyani and others to arrange a fake residential proof and other documents, which mentioned that Jiya was a resident of Gera Park Society on Boat Club Road in Pune.

The police said the agents had conspired with suspended constable Ghorpade at Bund Garden police station, who cleared Jiya's passport documents without verification. Ghorpade had played a role in issuing at least 67 passports carrying fake names and addresses. One of them was Sajid Batliwala (45), an aide of Dawood Ibrahim, arrested in December last year by the Mumbai crime branch.

On Saturday, the Bund Garden police produced Chopra and Bhat before the judicial magistrate (first class) who remanded them in police custody till Tuesday.

5 cops suspended for beating suspect
The Pune police on Friday suspended five policemen for alleging beating up a suspect on the police station premises seven months ago. Suspended personnel are sub-inspector SR Jagtap of Vishrambaug police station, constables SS Mathe, GR Ghodse, SS Dhalwale and AS Deokar. Senior police inspector incharge of Vishrambaug police Motichand Rathod and Crime PI S Nikam were transferred to Shivajinagar headquarters. Senior inspector of crime branch unit 1 Sunil Deshmukh has being given the additional charge of Vishrambaug police station.

Businessman held for fraud
The Economic Offences Wing of CBI, Mumbai, on Friday arrested Amritlal M Oswal alias Rashmikant Kantilal Shah of Bhavani Peth, proprietor of M/s Prithvi Developers, for allegedly duping the United Bank of India (UBI) to the tune of Rs2.49 crore in a home loan fraud.

On Saturday, the deputy superintendent of police (CBI-EOW) AK Chanda, produced Shah before the special judge in the Pune district and sessions court on Saturday.

Shah was remanded in police custody till May 31. Sanjay Kumar, the deputy general manager and chief regional manager of UBI, Mumbai, had lodged a complaint with the CBI on February 1.

The other suspects include P Vishwanadhan, the former manager of UBI's Deccan Gymkhana branch, Laxmi Constructions' proprietor Suresh Baliya Nagraj, Raj Developers' director Anand Raj, middlemen Parvez Khan, Deepak More and other borrowers.

The FIR mentioned that Vishwanadhan had sanctioned 14 fake housing loan proposals of the suspects and disbursed Rs249.89 lakh by way of housing loans.Mumbai-based model Jiya at the city court on Saturday
