Complementary temperaments and a desperate need for companionship sealed schoolgirls Manju Yadav and Jennifer Martus in a strong bond that ended in death, say their neighbours and relatives.

They hanged themselves from the ceiling fan on Friday at Martus’s residence in Blossom building, Vasant Nagari, leaving a note that they did not expect to do well in their exams.

Jennifer’s funeral was held on Monday, which, besides the family, her classmates from Sheth Vidya Mandir attended. Manju was cremated on Sunday.

“Even to buy bread they would go together,” said Sanjeev Sathe, the maternal uncle of Jennifer. Both the families encouraged their friendship since lonely Jennifer had a friend and Manju had a friend in a girl rather than a boy, which would not have been acceptable to her family.

Jennifer was bubbly, loved to laugh, danced well and wanted to be a choreographer. “But a lot of times we did not take her in the group dance because she was too good and we did not want to be overshadowed,” said one of her classmates.

Jennifer was the first one to help somebody in trouble. “I remember the time when I was alone in the class and nobody was talking to me, she said she would talk to me because she understood how lonely I felt,” said another girl who was with her till class VIII. Family sources said Jennifer had an aged grandfather and a mentally-disturbed aunt as a companion throughout the day while her parents went to work and returned late. “After eighth, she started changing. She used to be very upset with her marks and life in general,” said PSI Prakash More of Nallasopara Police Station.

Manju on the other hand was shy, demure and very homely, which made her father proud. “Everybody told me that they really liked her because of the respect she showed towards them, although she belonged to today’s generation,” said RL Yadav. In her family, girls are given education so that they get good grooms and live happily as homemakers. Her two elder sisters who are married as homemakers.
