More than three weeks after he began his month-long stay on a tree inside Chandrapur’s forests, Greenpeace activist Brikesh Singh received official backing of the BJP MP who played a major role in bringing to light anomalies in the government’s coal block allocations.

Hansraj Ahir, who represents Chandrapur in the Lok Sabha for BJP, visited Singh’s home inside the forests on Saturday and expressed his support to his agenda of promoting the use of unconventional sources of energy. “Over-dependence on fossil fuels in India is hurting our forests, wildlife and people who reside in the vicinity. In places like Chandrapur, this problem is acute. It is one of the most polluted towns in the country due to coal mining and Thermal power plants,” Ahir said, speaking DNA over the phone from Chandrapur on Sunday.

It was Ahir’s letter to the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) concerning anomalies in coal block allocation which prompted the latter to look into the issue in detail.

When asked about the other power sources he proposed could satisfy the country’s power demand, Ahir said, “In a letter they sent me,  the government said that 1,48,000MW of hydel power has been identified as usable. Another 70,000MW of wind power was identified for use. But they don’t implement the programmes formulated for getting this output and focus instead on nuclear energy and other such destructive ideas.”

Singh said the MP’s visit boosted his morale and added fresh energy to his campaign. “Our leaders need to ensure that it is their responsibility to protect the rights of forest communities and wildlife. If certain government policies compromise on these rights, they should take the lead in rejecting them,” he said.
