The monsoon has officially arrived in the city. And the first shower of this season has already claimed a life and injured one.

Khayyum, 45, died and Prakash Babar, 56, was injured after a portion of a single-storey building collapsed at Homi Modi street in Fort on Sunday evening. The common weather shed slab of Shaheen chamber building and Rehmat building collapsed around 7pm.

The two men were passing by the place when the slab fell on them. They had gone together to the spot to purchase something when the mishap occurred. Identified only as Khayyum as per hospital records, he was declared brought dead on admission to the St George hospital, while the other suffered injuries on chest and thighs.

“The left side of Khayyum’s chest was completely crushed. Babar’s condition has stabilised and he has been shifted to the general ward,” said an officer of the hospital.

The Mhada building was in a dilapidated state and is said to have collapsed due to consistent rain. “We were not even residents of the building. It was just sheer bad luck. Khayyum and I were passing from there. We wanted to purchase household stuff when the slab fell. The residents brought us to the hospital,” said Babar.

Also, a part of the platform roof at Byculla station fell due to strong monsoon winds. But commuters escaped and train services remained unaffected. Trains on the Central line were running late by 15 minutes due to rainfall and megablock.

The city witnessed consistent rain throughout the day. Colaba received 13.8mm of rain, while Santa Cruz recorded 24.9mm. “Today was the arrival of monsoon in the city. The northern limit of monsoon has reached till Dahanu. The occasional spell of rain and thunderstorm will occur and heavy rains will occur in some areas,” said RV Sharma, deputy director of the Indian Meteorological Department.

Sporadic incidents of uprooting of trees were also recorded in the suburbs. No major traffic snarls happened in the city. However, traffic moved slow in Hindmata, Bharatmata, King’s Circle, Kherwadi junction and Andheri subway.
