A 2,000-sqft madrasa continues to pose a huge hindrance in the completion of the Milan subway rail overbridge (RoB), with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials, the local Shiv Sena-BJP leadership and the opposition Congress locked in an inconclusive meet on Monday over the issue. In fact, the joint meeting between MMRDA officials, local MLA Krishna Hegde and Shiv Sena MLC Anil Parab remained inconclusive.

Hegde, who took the initiative of bringing the three disputing parties on the negotiating table, said those opposing the shifting of the madrasa were acting like hypocrites. "While they say they are not opposed to the Milan subway rail overbridge, in reality, they are opposed to every move aimed at shifting the madrasa. I am trying hard to convince them, but they do not seem convinced," added Hegde, who was instrumental in convincing the madrasa office-bearers to shift to a smaller location nearby.

The issue revolves around a structure aligned with the bridge and was being used primarily as madrasa. According to MMRDA officials, the rehabilitated one will be nearly

1,200 sqft. "The infrastructure agency will bear the construction cost of the new structure which will be built near a dead-end, thus ending the spilling over of people offering namaaz at the madrasa," said Hegde, adding that, "In fact, it will be 150m away from the main road. How can it ever cause an issue?"

However, former Shiv Sena MLC Anil Parab alleged that the construction of a madrasa by MMRDA has potential for a law and order problem. "As the madrasa is a religious school, we have pointed out that it can be shifted along with the other project-affected people in any of the buildings. However, madrasa office-bearers have a hidden agenda to convert it into a masjid. Once that happens, it may foment more problems."

Parab also pointed out that while madrasa office-bearers have expressed readiness to sign an undertaking assuring no disturbance to the traffic, the local police have submitted an adverse report.
