The University of Mumbai has asked engineering college principals to set up a Teacher Mentor Scheme to reduce the percentage of failures.

The directive was issued on Wednesday after only 19% of the students passed the first semester exams. There were 28,782 students from 51 colleges affiliated colleges that took the exam but only 5,501 managed to pass.

After a meeting of engineering college principals, a delegation of six principals met university officials at the Fort campus to discuss various issue relating to the dismal results.

Of the 51 colleges, 2 have pass percentages that fall below 10%, while 17 colleges are in the 10-30% range. Some management council members have demand a detailed inquiry into the sorry results.

“We have had a meeting with a delegation of engineering college principals to discuss the issue. We haves suggested the implementation of the Teacher Mentor Scheme in the colleges,” said Dr Rajpal Hande, director, Board of College and University Development.

SK Ukrande, dean, faculty of technology, University of Mumbai, who was also present at the meeting, said, “The main reason for the bad results is that students get less time to study the vast syllabus.”

During the discussion, the participants mainly talked about students not getting enough time for preparation. The admission process is not completed before September and the exams are held in December. Experts say that students should get more time to adjust to the new subjects in the first semester.

According to sources, they also discussed the level of difficulty of the papers. Paper setters will have 40% lenient questions and will have to consult with the chairman of the subject.
